Review Prophecy Girl by Faith McKay

Lacuna Valley #1

Rating: 3 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: Ever since Samantha Winthrop's mother moved them to Lacuna Valley, supposedly in search of better weather, the list of strange questions she has no answers for has been growing out of control.

Does her little sister, Violet, have the ability to make things happen just by "praying" for them? Are Sam's dreams really predicting the future? Is she destined to marry the boy she just met, and what is the mysterious orb that he's guarding? Why does she get the impression that there are dangerous creatures watching from the woods?

While Sam should be focusing on answering those questions, there is one other that makes them seem almost irrelevant: Is her mother planning on killing her and Violet?

Prophecy Girl tells the story of Samantha Winthrop. She just moved to Lacuna Valley and she's not happy about it. Her mothers made them move many times before, but she's just had it. But this is where things get interesting and she starts to question the things around her. When Nick enters her life it seems like she will be getting her answers, but does she really want to?

I have mixed feelings about Prophecy Girl. The idea behind the story was original and I liked the way Faith McKay plotted it out. But there were also parts I didn't like or even get. Sam's abused by her mother and I think it's very brave of the author to address such a heavy topic in her story. You're confronted with this at the beginning of the story and I could only think: why? Why does this happen? This question isn't really answered until way further into the story. And it doesn't happen once, but multiple times. Because it's such a heavy topic I would have like it when things had been explained earlier.

I liked the main characters in the story. It's told from Sam's perspective and although at the beginning she was a bit weak, she grew stronger when she had too. Together with Nick, a sweet boy, she discovers more about her destiny and why she has the power to look into the future.
My favorite character was Violet, Sam's 9 year old sister. She could be so funny at times and she lighted up the story for me.

I thought Faith McKay's writing style was okay, but I had to get used to it. Some parts in the story could have been left out in my opinion, but that is my personal preference. Overall, I thought the story was nice.
If you like an original story, than you want to give Prophecy Girl a chance.

Waiting on Wednesday (32)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week I'm waiting on

School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins

School Spirits (School Spirits, #1)Title: School Spirits
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Will be published on: May 14th, 2013 (Disney-Hyperion)
Series: School Spirits #1
Synopsis from Goodreads: Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.
Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

I've read Hex Hall a while ago and absolutely loved it! Still have to read the rest of the series, but I can't wait for this spin-off!

Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish. Every Tuesday has another topic and different bloggers give their top ten. I love making lists, so here's mine for this week!

This week topic is

Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

1. Zoey Redbird (House of Night series by P.C. & Kirsten Cast)
Twilight (Twilight, #1)When I first started the HoN series I liked it. Up until the fifth book. I don't know what changed there (me or the book/characters), but it started to annoy me, and not only Zoey. I gave up on the series when that kid died (was his name Eric?) singing a Glee song. Zoey Redbird is one of the most annoying characters I've ever read about, with the not wanting to leave her human boyfriend or anyone else for that matter. Somewhere it stopped being seeing the good in people in just being blind for someone else's flaws.

2. Bella (Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer)
You'll find quite a few characters on my list from books I enjoyed. I read Twilight long before I started blogging and I'd never read reviews about it. I understand why people don't like the series, but I did (wouldn't be so sure if I liked them now though). I did had a struggle getting through book two. I know a break-up can be bad, but just get out into the world and don't whine all the time about it. It will get annoying.

3. Molly (Undeadly by Michele Vail)
I'm not even going to elaborate on this one. How ignorant can you be?

4. Ever (Evermore series by Alyson Noel)
Glow (Sky Chasers, #1)I had the same frustrations with her that I had with Bella. I liked reading the series, but Ever could just not make up her mind and that irritated me.

5. Kieran (Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan)
I thought this book was amazing and I want to kick myself for not having read the second book yet! But Kieran... If you've read the book you probably know what I mean. He's very claiming for one and than the stuff he says at the end. Freaky!

6. Madison (L.A. Candy / The Fame Game series by Lauren Conrad)
YA is my favorite book genre in the world, but once in a while I like to mix things up. And that's were I read Chick Lit (or another genre). I liked the L.A. Candy series, but Madison was so irritating. I think this was Lauren Conrad's intention, so it worked. I've read The Fame Game and have Starstruck on my TBR pile. For a quick read these books are amazing.

7. Peris (Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld)
I've only read the first two books in the series, and the third on my TBR pile. I love this series, but Peris just annoyed me. Tally idolized him, but he's just lame. He didn't even dare to escape.

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)8.  Juliette (Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi)
First of all, I love this series! (I want to make that clear;)). While I'm making this list I notice I mostly get annoyed by characters who can't make up their mind. And now that I think of it this is also what irritates me in real life. How hard can it be?! (But you know what they say, what annoys you in others is mostly something you're not allowed to do yourself, but you do all the time). It's the same with Juliette, especially in Unravel Me. I just wanted to shake her and scream at her. But I'm still in love with the series and can't wait to read Book 3!

Only eight for me this week! There are probably many more characters out there who annoyed me at some point, but this is what I could come up with for today!

What characters annoyed you?

Review Sister Assassin by Kiersten White

Sister Assassin (Sister Assassin, #1)Title: Sister Assassin
Author: Kiersten White
Published: February 19th, 2013 (HarperCollins Children's Books)
Pages: 302

Series:
Mind Games #1

Rating: 3 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: She never chose her deadly gift but now she’s forced to use it. How far would you go to protect the only family you have left?

Annie is beset by fleeting strange visions and a guilty conscience. Blind and orphaned, she struggles to care for her feisty younger sister Fia, but things look up when both sisters are offered a place at Kessler School for Exceptional Girls.

Born with flawless intuition, Fia immediately knows that something’s wrong, but bites her tongue… until it’s too late. For Fia is the perfect weapon to carry out criminal plans and there are those at Kessler who will do anything to ensure her co-operation.

With Annie trapped in Kessler’s sinister clutches, instincts keep Fia from killing an innocent guy and everything unravels. Is manipulative James the key to the sisters’ freedom or an even darker prison? And how can Fia atone for the blood on her hands?

This is my first book I've read by Kiersten White. I've heard many amazing things about her Paranormalcy series and I even own the first book, but I still haven't read it. I saw Sister Assassin for the first time in the US version, called Mind Games, which, next to a different title, also has a different cover.
So first of all I just can't understand why the UK version is so different. I think both title and cover are stronger in the US version.

I was really excited for this book and I was thrilled that I got a review copy via Netgalley. Unfortunately the story wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be. This has majorly to do with two things. The first is my own fault. I tend to not read a synopsis again before I start reading a book. It was a while ago since I actually read it and most of the book I was confused about Fia's power. In the story she's special because of it, but not until the end it is said what that power actually is. But the story reads as though you should know it. Which you should, if you just read the synopsis.

The second thing is that I just couldn't relate to both Fia and Annie. The story is told from their perspectives. Every chapter is told from Fia or Annie and also in different time zones. Some chapters are in the present, others tell their story up to two years ago. This gave the story an interesting twist. Through different settings you get their story and why they're in this situation. But it felt so distant and sometimes I didn't even care what happened to them.

Although I must say that the ending took me completely by surprise. I think my mouth was hanging open for like five minutes before I really grasped what had just happened. I just didn't get it. Why did the story had to end this way?!

I liked Sister Assassin, but I think it could have had a lot more to it! Did you also read this book? Let me know what you thought of it!

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. Bloggers share what new books (physical or virtual) they got this week. I like getting new books and showing them. So here's my haul for this week!

Just one book for me this week. But with good reason, because I spend four days in Berlin this week! And that was so awesome! I've seen a lot of the city and it's so beautiful! Especially with all the snow. But since I don't read German I didn't buy any books there. It was an awesome week!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week I'm waiting on

Breathless by Brigid Kemmerer

Breathless (Elemental, #2.5)Title: Breathless
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Will be published on: May, 2013 (Kensington Teen)
Series: Elemental #2.5
Synopsis from Goodreads: Nick Merrick is supposed to be the level-headed one. The peacemaker. Since it’s just him and his three hotheaded brothers against the world, that’s a survival tactic.

But now he’s got problems even his brothers can’t help him survive.

His so-called girlfriend, Quinn, is going quick as mercury from daring to crazy. Meanwhile, Quinn’s dancer friend Adam is throwing Nick off balance, forcing him to recognize a truth he’d rather shove back into the dark.

He can feel it—-the atmosphere is sizzling. Danger is on the way. But whatever happens next, Nick is starting to find out that sometimes nothing you do can keep the peace.

This series is so amazing! So of course I can't wait for the next books! A few weeks ago I was waiting on Spirits, the third book in the series! But first this novella will be published. Yay! More Merrick brothers!

Review The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter

The Goddess Test (Goddess Test, #1)Title: The Goddess Test
Author: Aimee Carter
Published: April 19th, 2011 (Harlequin)
Pages: 293
Source: bought
Series:
Goddess Test #1

Rating: 4.5 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: It's always been just Kate and her mom--and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear that her mother won't live past the fall.

Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld--and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.

Kate is sure he's crazy--until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride and a goddess.

I love books based on Greek mythology and this one was absolutely amazing! The Goddess Test tells the story of Kate. Her mom is dying and she would do anything to keep her around longer. When she meets Henry that comes as a real possibility, but not for free. Kate has to spend six months of the year in Henry's house. She agrees and she has to past the seven tests to become Queen of the Underworld, alongside Henry.

I love Kate. She first meets Henry when one of her 'friends' plays a cruel trick on her and dies in the process. Henry brings her back to live in exchange for Kate's presence during the winter months. Kate hesitates, but she doesn't want anyone getting hurt because of her, so in the end she agrees. And that's what I admire most about her. She cares so much for other people. She puts everything aside for the people she loves (or not).

I didn't like Henry at all in the beginning of the story. He just seemed so mean, but that changes and in the end I grew fond of him. Like I said I love stories based on Greek mythology and I loved getting to know Aimee Carter's version of Hades.

I have this annoying habit to want to know halfway through the story how many pages the book has exactly. That way I found out way too early who the Gods and Goddesses were. So a tip, don't look at the last pages of the books, it will ruin the end for you!

Kate has to pass seven tests to become Queen of the Underworld and make sure Henry won't fade away. Kate doesn't know what the tests are and when they take place. As a reader you also don't know what exactly is happening and that's what makes this story really hard to put down.

Aimee Carter has an awesome writing style and I wanted to kick myself for not reading The Goddess Test sooner! After finishing it I immediately downloaded The Goddess Hunt (Goddess Test #0.5) and that was also amazing! I can't get enough of this series! I'm starting the second book soon!

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. Bloggers share what new books (physical or virtual) they got this week. I like getting new books and showing them. So here's my haul for this week!

We had the first snow of the year this week! I always enjoy the first day and the days I don't have to go outside! Going to work is kind of a nightmare right now. So, what do I do to make it all better? Read books! I finally started The Goddess Test this week. And I'm in love with this series! It's amazing! I immediately downloaded the novella and I'm buying the second book soon!
I also got Dance of Shadows in the mail this week! I wasn't expecting it, so that was an awesome surprise! It's the most beautiful cover I've ever seen and I can't wait to read it!

Review Chase Tinker and the House of Magic by Malia Ann Haberman

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic (Chase Tinker, #1)Title: Chase Tinker and the House of Magic
Author: Malia Ann Haberman
Published: August 15th, 2012 (Crossroad Press)
Pages: 465

Series:
Chase Tinker #1

Rating: 3.5 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: In Chase Tinker's world, magic, lies and secrets can be a lethal combination...

Thirteen-year-old Chase Tinker can't understand why he has the power to move things with his mind. Besides that, his dad has been missing for over a year, causing his mom to be too upset to pay much attention to her sons, so now he's been busted for shoplifting. As if this isn't enough to worry about, his younger brother Andy suddenly has a weird magical ability too.

Can things get any crazier? Chase thinks.

Then, a grandfather they thought to be long dead arrives at their door. He wants Chase and Andy to come visit him for the summer so they can learn about their supernatural heritage and why they have magical powers in the first place.

The boys soon find out that Grandfather, along with their cousin Janie, lives on a remote island in the middle of Puget Sound in an out-of-this-world house where fantastic magic can be found in practically every room, stairway and corridor. Chase can't believe their dad has been keeping so much from them.

It's an even bigger shock when Chase learns that all their magic is controlled by a very powerful and mysterious Relic in the attic, and if anything happens to this relic, every bit of Tinker magic will be lost forever. He's even more disturbed when he learns his family has a dark and powerful enemy that is determined to steal all their magic, their house and their relic.

Now Chase must find a way to stop these evil beings, while at the same time figuring out what has happened to his dad, unraveling even more Tinker lies and secrets and not letting on that he has a huge crush on the housekeeper's daughter.

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a fun middle grade read! When Malia emailed me with a review request I was hesitant at first. One, because I was super busy at the time and two, a middle grade indie published book didn't bring up many happy memories. I'm glad I decided to give it a chance anyway!

When I first started this blog I read an indie published book without realizing it and I absolutely loved it! But after that there came a lot that were really bad. So, I'm always careful now with these kind of books. Luckily, there are still indie authors out there who can really write a good story. This is one of them!

I started this book late at night. I love to start a new book right before I go to sleep and just read the first chapter to get to know the author's writing style. I immediately loved the writing style of Malia. Most of you probably know that's one of the most important things for me in a book.

Like I said at the beginning Chase Tinker is a middle grade book, which isn't a bad thing. But I know I don't like these books so often. Mostly because I get annoyed with the MC, because he or she is so young I feel like I'm their mother (and I'm 24 with no kids of my own). It wasn't that bad with this book. I enjoyed reading it, although sometimes I did caught myself thinking: no Chase, you can't go fight the world on your own. You're only 12 years old!

But looking past that I would definitely recommend Chase Tinker and the House of Magic to kids. This is a fun and exciting book for them! There's a lot of action and the world building is pretty interesting with the house full of rooms with different magical powers. That's pretty awesome! And for the "older" ones you might want to give this one a chance, too! I definitely enjoyed reading it!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. This week I'm waiting on

Red by Alison Cherry

RedTitle: Red
Author: Alison Cherry
Will be published on: October 8th, 2013 (Delacorte Press)
Synopsis from Goodreads: Felicity St. John has it all—loyal best friends, a hot guy, and artistic talent. And she’s right on track to win the Miss Scarlet pageant. Her perfect life is possible because of just one thing: her long, wavy, coppery red hair.

Having red hair is all that matters in Scarletville. Redheads hold all the power—and everybody knows it. That’s why Felicity is scared down to her roots when she receives an anonymous note:

I know your secret.

Because Felicity is a big fake. Her hair color comes straight out of a bottle. And if anyone discovered the truth, she’d be a social outcast faster than she could say "strawberry blond." Her mother would disown her, her friends would shun her, and her boyfriend would dump her. And forget about winning that pageant crown and the prize money that comes with it—money that would allow her to fulfill her dream of going to art school.

Felicity isn’t about to let someone blackmail her life away. But just how far is she willing to go to protect her red cred?

The synopsis sounds pretty good and I love the cover! Sometimes that's all it takes for me to want to read a book! Let the girl fight began! ;)

Review Partials by Dan Wells

Partials (Partials, #1)Title: Partials
Author: Dan Wells

Partials Sequence #1

Rating: 4 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: The only hope for humanity isn’t human.

In a world where people have been all but wiped out by a virus created by part-human cyborgs called ‘Partials’, and where no baby survives longer than three days, a teenage girl makes it her mission to find a cure, and save her best friend’s unborn child.

But finding a cure means capturing a Partial…

I think it comes as no surprise that I'm a fan of dystopians! I love getting to know a new world and most dystopians have a strong MC, one of the things that makes me love a book almost instantly. The only downside is that I can't read too much of this genre in a row, because it does get confusing after a while.

Partials is, of course, a dystopian and I loved it. The world setting in this book was really cool. Kira lives in a world where there hasn't been a surviving baby in eleven years. If they don't find a cure the human race will come to extinct.

Kira is a strong MC (yay!) and she's one of the brightest person's in her year of medical training. She's determined to find a cure and she's close to getting one. Although her superiors won't let her do what's necessary to get it, catching a partial, a kind of human robot. When her best friend gets pregnant, Kira becomes even more determined than she was before.

It took me a while to get into the story and get to know the world and Kira. Dan Wells created a beautiful world setting, but it also took some time to introduce it. The pace really picked up after Kira sets out with a group to catch a partial. After that it was almost impossible to put the book down!

That's also the moment the most awesome character in the book is introduced: Samm, the partial Kira manages to catch. At first he doesn't say anything and you just want to scream at him. But it also makes him very mysterious. When he finally started talking I was just as fascinated by him as Kira was. I want more Samm!

The ending didn't came as a surprise for me. But it's not a bad thing! I love it when I suspect something is going to happen and after a while (or sometimes even immediately) I want them to happen and they do. The ending made me very curious for book two and I can't wait to read it!

If you love dystopian, then you definitely want to read Partials!

Mini review Origins: The Fire by Debra Driza

Origins: The Fire (MILA 2.0, #0.5)Title: Origins: The Fire
Author: Debra Driza
Published: January 8th, 2013 (Katherine Tegen Books)
Pages: 15
Source: freebie
Series:
MILA 2.0 #0.5

Rating: 4 stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: Heart-stopping and electric, MILA 2.0: Origins: The Fire contains a short prequel story and an excerpt to MILA 2.0, the first book in a riveting Bourne Identity–style trilogy by Debra Driza.

Mila can't remember anything before the fire that took her father's life. It's normal to have some memory loss after traumatic events, but Mila doesn't remember if she's ever learned to ride a bike, or if she's ever been in love. Nothing.

What she doesn't know is that she isn't supposed to remember—that she was built in a computer science lab and programmed to forget. Because if she remembers, she might discover her true identity.

The question is: If she relived the fire, what would she see?

I've been looking forward to reading MILA 2.0 for quite some time and I jumped at the chance to read this prequel to the series! It's a fun way to get to know the author's writing style and see a bit of this series. And I loved it! Although it was just 15 pages the waiting for the first book (which will be published in March) is now even harder.

Like the title suggests you get to know Mila while she's waking up and discovers her house is on fire. I think this story will make more sense once I've read the first book and get to know Mila and her life. She manages to escape the house thinking her parents won't be there, but then she sees their car on the porch and she goes back inside where she thinks she sees her father. But does she?

Who could have thought a book with only 15 pages could have a killer cliff hanger at the end? Well, Debra Driza totally managed that! I loved her writing style and I'm already hooked by the story. I'll definitely be picking up MILA 2.0 when it comes out!

And last, but not least: the cover. I can't write this review without mentioning how gorgeous I think they are! I especially love the dark read back ground on this one!

Stacking the Shelves (27)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. Bloggers share what new books (physical or virtual) they got this week. I like getting new books and showing them. So here's my haul for this week!

One of my New Year Resolutions for 2013 was to buy not so many books any more. I broke this resolution big time this week! I promised myself to read at least two books for every one I bought. I should have read at least 20 books this week. And that didn't happen. But to make it less bad: I didn't buy any books this week!

I'm really happy with this week's haul! I got approved for two amazing ARC's. And I mean A-MA-ZING! Also found some awesome freebies. I had been looking for Turned at Dark for a long time, because I couldn't find it anywhere, but C.C. Hunter put it on her website, Yay! I also got some late birthday gifts this week! Time to take some days off and do nothing but read!
